This all started with Operation Blue Star, a military operation that was ordered by that time present Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to flush out militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Golden Temple is a sacred shrine of the Sikh religion. This Blue Star operation deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. This operation also caused much damage to the temple and resulted in the deaths of local many civilians.
The assassination of present Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was a retaliation for Operation Blue Star. After the assassination, mobs incited by opposition political leaders started targeting Sikh neighborhoods. Mobs looted Sikhs’ houses and businesses. Many Sikhs were beaten and killed.
The official death toll is estimated to be around 3,000, but unofficial figures suggest it could be much higher. The 1984 riots left an indelible mark on the Sikh community and exposed the vulnerabilities of the Indian constitution and legal institutions.
